Conflict Approaches: Lose-Lose, Win-Lose, Win-Win

Very astute observation. Typically I will try to approach conflict with the win-win result in mind; however, I find that this tactic is nearly impossible to uphold due to my geography and the close-mindedness of those in my city. Obviously there are exceptions to that over-generalized statement, but the people referred to above tend to be ones I find myself in conflict with more often ;)

Scientific terms like “organism” and “photosynthesis” have no widely accepted equivalent in sign language, so deaf students and professionals have unexpected hurdles when talking about science. Here, Lydia Callis, a professional sign language interpreter, translates a shortened version of an article by Douglas Quenqua, explaining how new signs are being developed that may enhance scientific learning and communication.

ASL Gotye “Somebody I Used to Know” (HiDef)

This video is an ASL interpretation of Gotye’s “Somebody I Used To Know.” An expression of ASL music composed by a team of Deaf and CODA (Child of Deaf Adult) members, including the crew and cast members.

Love it!

This book is blatant exploitation of deaf people and American Sign Language (ASL) for profit. Kristin is not deaf and is not a native signer of ASL. The publication of this book perpetuates a long history of the dominant majority in exploiting the bodies, language, and culture of minority populations. This work perpetuates racism, sexism, audism, and is entirely disrespectful to the American Deaf Community and to any population who has had their culture appropriated in racist, sexist, ableist, and ethnocentric ways.
